The Fields Brook Superfund Site is located in an industrialized area of Ashtabula, OH. Polynuclear Aromatic Hydrocarbons (PAH’s), Volatile Organic Compounds (VOCs), metals, Polychlorinated Biphenyls (PCB’s), radionuclides, and metals contaminated Fields Brook and its surrounding floodplain along more than three miles of this tributary to the Ashtabula River. Fields Brook discharges into the river approximately 8,000 feet upgradient of Lake Erie.
Opal’s personnel were responsible to construct a three-acre multi-media hazardous waste containment repository into which the excavated sediments were to be placed. Following construction of the repository vault, the stream’s flood plain and channel were excavated from upgradient to downgradient locations. Excavated soils were transported to the repository along more than three miles of newly constructed haul roads for the completion of the construction.
