Opal was retained by Honeywell International, Inc. to implement the Voluntary Clean-up Plan for the closure of a former underground fluorspar mine in Boulder County, Colorado. The mine had extensive surface features and underground workings including deep pits and shafts exceeding 1,400 feet in depth. The reclamation plan for the ten acre site included:
- demolition of surface mine facilities,
- testing/removal of buried electrical equipment and underground fuel tanks
- consolidation of approximately 32,000 cubic yards (yd3) of waste rock containing high levels of arsenic and other metals in an on-site repository,
- mucking, cleaning, and backfilling for closure of the Warren Adit,
- concrete capping of the main Burlington Shaft,
- concrete plugging and backfilling of deep subsidence features and pits,
- relocating a natural drainage around the site, including channel blasting,
- installation and lining of surface water control channels throughout the site,
- filling of a mine pond with 45,000 bird balls to isolate it from wildlife,
- shaft closure with Polyurethane Foam (PUF),
- perimeter barbed wire and chain link fence installation,
- soils lime amendment and revegetation
